Read previewThe Biden administration this week pushed out a slate of rules it says are meant to boost competitiveness and put more money into workers' pockets. There are already challenges to at least one of the rules — but together they could land overtime pay for millions more workers, ban noncompetes that prevent workers from moving into jobs in similar industries, and help people get automatic refunds for delayed or canceled flights. More workers eligible for overtime payUnder the Department of Labor's new rule, many workers who make under $43,888 will be eligible for overtime pay effective July 1. A ban on noncompetes that keep workers from taking new jobsPerhaps the most sweeping action for workers came from the Federal Trade Commission, which finalized a rule to ban noncompetes in most cases. Will a ban on noncompetes, new overtime thresholds, or airline refunds affect your life?

ET, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its March jobs report. February brought the unemployment rate within spitting distance of 4%, rising to 3.9% from 3.7% in January. What could come from Friday’s jobs reportFebruary’s jobs report came as yet another surprise to economists. For instance, last month January’s job gains were revised down to 229,000 from the blowout 353,000 that kicked off 2024. The unemployment rate went up by half a percentage point from the post-pandemic low of 3.4% last April.

She began the body of work from which “White Shoes” is drawn during graduate studies at the International Center of Photography (ICP) program at Bard College. Nona Faustine/Courtesy Brooklyn MuseumFor centuries, New York City played a significant role in the enslavement of Black people. By 1730, forty-two percent of White households in the city enslaved Black people — the second-largest percentage of household slave ownership, after Charleston, South Carolina, in the United States. A tiara is balanced on her head, representing Western royalty and the dehumanizing ways White people treated enslaved Black women. Faustine's "White Shoes" exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum opens with her 2012 shot "Venus of Vlacke Bos," (far left).

She decided to try a book she had heard about often, bell hooks’ “All About Love: New Visions." Tiffany Stewart, a writer and producer in Los Angeles, first read “All About Love” two years ago with her reading group and reread it recently. “For bell, the love she talks about is a love for justice. 'All About Love' is a love letter to justice." She responded to hooks' insistence that love was more a verb than a noun, an act of will as opposed to an abstract ideal.

I am from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and I love going to both Culver's and Kopp's. Kopp's has always been my favorite for frozen custard, but the sandwiches can be hit or miss. AdvertisementAs someone born and raised in the Midwest, I take my frozen custard, burgers, and fries seriously. It's an iconic combination of food that's perfect for any season around here, and where I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Culver's and Kopp's are the top two places to go for it. Work and sleep. The other issue is pacing — or rather, the relationship between pacing and depth. There is no sense of consistent pacing throughout the novel, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But that swiftness doesn’t always play well with the transitions from one character or group of characters to the next. THE NEW NATURALS | By Gabriel Bump | Algonquin | 295 pp.

If You Can Make It Here Great design for a great city (New York, of course — where else?) Speculation on the 'real reason' tech companies are shedding workersSome on TikTok and Reddit have posited that the "real reason" tech companies are cutting jobs is to tamp down fat salaries bloated by the Great Resignation. Tech companies scrambled to meet demand and went on a hiring binge during the pandemic. At a time when wages were climbing at the fastest pace in decades across the board, tech companies were especially generous to new hires — and even existing employees. A year and a half ago, compensation was a "completely different ball game," a former recruiter at Google told Insider. Will tech companies then try to hire back their workers at lower salaries?

This was created so that Black women could support Black women because nobody else seems to be.”James said she never intended to put another race down and she encouraged the trend with the purpose of showing love to Black women. “Black women are navigating the combined force of racism and sexism on a daily basis,” she added. The creator of the trend, Michele, said she applauds Black men for sometimes defending Black women on the app.
